Tactical Espionage Action

Metal Gear Solid is a game and series renowned for defining the stealth genre and bringing forth a whole range of games that went against the idea that everything needs to be about action, guns and explosion. Of course, MGS has it's fair share of all three of these. But as the game's title says, tactics and espionage are absolutely crucial factors in playing this game right. Run out in the open and you'll soon find yourself under a hail of gunfire from every guard that has you in their crosshairs. Instead, the point of MGS is to stealthily make your way through every area, conserve your ammo and equipment, and make sure your presence is completely unknown to those around you. And oh boy, is it fun.

Now, anyone who's heard of Metal Gear Solid by now knows the series is kind of infamous for it's rather long cutscenes and heavy focus on story. But don't think for a second that this is another one of those games that throws a half-baked, generic storyline into the mix as justification for mediocre gameplay. MGS is directed by the brilliant Japanese mind of Hideo Kojima, and this man knows how to make a story that'll always have you on the edge of your seat. If not for MGS, many of your favourite games today may not have incorporated stealth elements in the way they did, and some series like Splinter Cell for example might not have even existed. While MGS might feel a bit lacking to people that have played other games in the genre that came out later, by itself it is still a brilliant game that stands up even today. You have a variety of options at your disposal to sneak through the dangerous Shadow Moses facility, such as crawling, sidling across walls, hiding under various objects in the scenery or Solid Snake's infamous cardboard box, of which there are many located within the game. Guards can be taken out with guns, with your own bare fists, or more stealthily by sneaking up behind and strangling them. This game doesn't have the ability to drag corpses like in later installments, but instead bodies will instantly dissapear after death. This makes it a little bit less challenging, but it is not too much of a difference. Ther... Full Review
