February 26, 2012 Portal 2 took everything that the original did and did it better. On top of that, it added interesting new gameplay features that compliment the original portal mechanics. The Source engine really doesn't show it's age at all in Portal 2: the game looks fantastic and has a great art direction. Test chambers are less uniform than the ones in Portal and this correlates with the story: as time goes on, the facility becomes more and more wrecked. Fauna is a particularly interesting way of showing this age. Much like the original, portals allow for complex puzzles which provoke much thought. With new mechanics such as hard light bridges, players must learn more and apply their brains much more. That's exactly what a puzzle game should do: make you use your brain more. Portal 2 also likes to challenge your reflexes, but not to as much of an extent. Singleplayer and co-op each have their own campaigns, giving the game some more depth to co-op than adding another player. Both modes provide an interesting experience: singleplayer is more story-driven and immersive, whilst co-op revolves around how well the two players work together and how well they don't. Aside from being much too short with little replay value, Portal 2 is indeed a very good game. Co-op can still provide some fun every once in a while and the lifetime of this game - although not part of the core product - can be greatly extended through custom maps. |
